Alexandra Jamieson

Artist and Curator

About Alexandra

Alexandra Jamieson audaciously spends much of her waking life making art despite not having any art school debt. A third-generation self-taught artist from Portland, OR, she gets her studio dirty in Brooklyn, NYC. In her other work, she has published five books on food, communication, and personal growth, and was the co-creator and co-star of the Oscar nominated documentary Super Size Me.

Her latest art includes the Abortion Trading Cards and has been featured in the Mona Niko Gallery, The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Gallery, the Kunstraum Gallery, The Clio Art Fair, and Las Laguna Art Gallery. Her first solo show, Our Stories: Patterns + What We Inherit, opened at Compere Collective in 2022.

Alexandra was awarded a City Artist Corp grant in 2021, and curates group exhibitions featuring women, trans, and non-binary artists under the name We Create | NYC, a fiscal sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.

She creates commissions for private clients around the world and has been featured as a writer and coach in Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Good Morning America, CNN, USA Today, and more.

Abortion Trading Card 1 of 36, 2023 (2.5 x 3.5 in)

About The Abortion Trading Cards by Alexandra Jamieson

The Abortion Trading Card project began on the back of my mother’s bicycle as she rode around Portland, Oregon encouraging people to vote in the 1978 Oregon Governor’s race. Raised by back-to-the-land hippies, civic engagement was served at the dinner table along with homemade potato bread. Mom was an artist and both parents were teachers, but I didn’t go to art school because I didn’t feel talented.

From 2003-15 I wrote four books on natural health, but the 2020 pandemic and violent political times couldn’t convey the emotions and urgency in my heart. Turning to art as a self-care practice, my watercolor of an upside down American flag was immediately purchased by a friend: the painting wasn’t “perfect” but it made her feel seen and connected, and I realized that made me an artist. This series combines a lifetime of activism with my love of history and gallows humor.

This 36-card deck imagines a dystopian future where abortion care is totally illegal and women educate each other about reproductive health surreptitiously using playing cards. The cards contain anatomy, abortion history from around the world, vocabulary, and abortifacient herbs.
